Chapter Twelve
The Mitra Mystery
As Doone and Princess Mitra traveled on the road from Gilorn, Mitra leaned against him. Her head rested against Dooneâs chest. Her warmth was comfortable, seeping past the hard surface of the armor and making his flesh tingle. He couldnât tell if this was magic or attraction.
Glas magic, the green spell of the forest? Or simply her beauty mesmerizing him?
Healthy leaves and purple orchids blossomed in her hair. Their fragrance tingled in Dooneâs nose and left him feeling light-headed. The princess hummed, her voice as soothing as a river rushing over rocks. Each time she placed her hand on Dooneâs, his heart felt as though it skipped a beat.
When Doone thought about her illness in the village and how she could have died, he felt simultaneously relieved at her recovery and guilty that he had put her in such a dangerous situation. He was pleased he had helped the villagers, but he hated that Mitra could have died. Her kindness, charity, and devotion to take care of the villagers even as sheâd been ill made him respect her even more.
Occasionally, Mitra glanced up into his eyes, searching for his gaze through the grill of his helmet.
âDo you have a question?â Doone asked.
Her lips quirked upward. âNo. I just wanted to look at you.â
Her words sent a rush through him.
Doone looked away. His one task was to return Mitra to the queen. If he gave the slightest indication of how he felt about her, his cover would be completely blown. Princess Mitra was supposed to be Sir Galladâs daughter.
He couldnât fall in love with her.
âIs something wrong, Sir Gallad?â
âNo,â he said, keeping his eyes on the road ahead.
She continued to stare at him, causing him to squirm in the saddle. She was back to her mischievous self.
They reached the next town after traveling half an hour by horse. They passed through, only stopping briefly for provisions, not giving the crowd a chance to gather and hold them up. Doone followed the road as it led towards a horizon smeared with gray. By late afternoon, they came into rain. Mitra hid herself under his green cape, but Doone embraced the cool drops. Being Osea, he didnât mind the water. Doone led the horse around troublesome spots where the road was washed out.
By the time they reached the next town, the sky had grown darker, and Mitra was soaked and shivering in his arms. The settlement was larger and far more populated than the last ones. Busy and full of life as a city should be, the only slightly curious quirk was the large number of signs with snakes on them. They passed a banner with a sleepy-looking serpent in front of the inn. At a tavern, a painted sign of a drunken viper guzzled a pint of ale, tipping back the mug with his tail. At a smith shop, a forged form of a serpent hung above the door. Doone wondered if the town was plagued with serpents.
Other than that, the town seemed normal enough.
